How to Create a Podcast

A podcast is a great way to reach more people with your message and promote your brand and products. A podcast is an audio file, and they’re usually the audio version of blog posts in the same way an audiobook is the spoken version of a printed novel.

And a great thing about podcast is that it’s really not so difficult to create one. In fact, you can whip out your smartphone and start recording whatever it is that comes to your mind to say. Of course, the end result of those efforts may simply seem too amateurish to actually help you out. So if you want to create a podcast that can actually make you seem better and your brand more impressive, you’re going to need a bit more preparation.

The Right Equipment

You start by using quality equipment. This starts with a great microphone. The quality of the microphone you use will be the most important factor in producing a high quality podcast. Lucky for you, a very good microphone doesn’t have to be all that expensive.

There are many types of microphones you can use, including USB microphones. Some offer a microphone and headset combo. Just make sure that it comes with 2 important features. First, it should pick up your voice cleanly so you wouldn’t have to shout to get your voice recorded. Second, it should refrain from getting the background sounds and noises you don’t want included, such as the traffic or the barking dogs outside your home.

Other equipment you’ll need will include a computer, a recording program, and editing software so you can polish your recordings. You’ll then need a site to submit the podcasts to.

The Right Format

Like blog posts, you can talk about any topic relevant to your niche. Of course, you will want to limit the topics to those subjects which you know your target audience will appreciate.

There are several formats you can try out. Some simply has one person talking. This may work, just like talk radio works. For example, if you’re trying to explain a process that a person may listen to (a gardening procedure, for example), then you can just go at it alone.

Then you may also want to have two or three different people discussing the same topic. This can liven up your podcast considerably, as each one will have a different perspective and opinion on the subject matter.

You may also conduct an interview as well. This can be very enlightening, and it can drum up interest in your podcasts if you can invite fascinating people to grace your program. These people may have knowledge and skills that you may not possess, and they can help educate your listeners.

The Right Plan

While there is a temptation to record a podcast without a plan—it’s easier and it’s authentic—you should really have an outline. You have to prepare, so that you know what you will say and do for any contingency. For an interview, for example, you have to prepare a lot of questions so that you won’t run out of things to ask.

All things considered, creating a podcast is easy, isn’t it? Now get some equipment, plan your podcasts, and practice your speaking voice!
